Lumber in Humboldt is king. It leaves all other products far in the rear, and we have, therefore, devoted a special article to that industry. The wool business is carried on in mammoth proportions. We have devoted in a previous page a detailed account of this profitable industry. DAIRYING. Probably one of the most important industries of the county next to the two above mentioned is that of dairying. From 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 pounds of butter is annually produced, and the number of milch cows in the county may be estimated at about 12,500. Green feed abounds the year round. It is very nutritious, and the perennial streams supply an abundance of water. This is indeed the dairyman's paradise, for it combines all the advantages which especially adapt it to this purpose. Combined with the green food and water is an equable climate, which dispenses with the necessity of making large outlays for barns, etc., and storage of feed, for here the cattle may wander in the fields at any time of the year. The climate and soil are especially adapted to the growth of clover and feed of a like nature, and three or four cuts a year are not unusual for a clover patch. The manufacture of cheese has only lately been attempted, but the success with which it has been attended is so satisfactory that it is certain it will become, at no distant day, a thriving industry. The one factory, established a year ago, has turned out 1,100 cheese, aggregating 55,000 pounds. The value of dairy products in Humboldt county for the past two years will average, including calves, about $725,000. LIVE STOCK. The live stock interests are prominent as a money-making factor in Humboldt and add no little to the general wealth of the county. The native grasses are nutritious, abundance of water and congenial climate adapt this county for live stock purposes as well as for dairying. The mill owners as soon as they clear the land of timber make it a point to sow it in clover, mesquite and other grasses which are best adapted to pasturage.
