The harbor is partially protected, being the shape of a horseshoe, formed by a sharp trend or curve which the coast takes in a westerly direction at this point. It is accessible for all crafts the greater part of the year. The water is deep close in to the shore, and there is plenty of sea room. Beds of seaweed break the force of the sea when southerly winds prevail. The surrounding country consists of large sheep and stock ranges, occupied by a superior class of settlers, the majority of whom own their lands and are steadily improving their property. Besides grazing, there are large tracts of timber land, chiefly oak, the bark of which finds its way to the Cove in considerable quantities. The annual export of tanbark from this point amounts to about 2,000 cords. Like all open harbors on this coast, Shelter Cove is only used as a shipping point during the summer months. The exports consists almost entirely of wool, tanbark and live stock, and the imports of merchandise to supply the wants of the settlers. A substantial wharf has recently been constructed at Shelter Cove. The great attractions offered by the locality in the way of hunting and fishing, with its picturesque surroundings, have already made it a favorite resort in summer, and numbers of hunters and campers find their way there annually. It is the intention to encourage this class of travel by making the attractions of the place and the ease in which it can be reached, as widely known as possile. A new hotel which, while serving to supply the wants of those whose business brings them to the Cove, will also afford accommodation to parties visiting the place for other purposes. A store has also been erected, and these atid other improvements in contemplation, with a steady flow of traffic to and from the Cove, cannot fail to add materially to the attractions of this point. That the place will eventually become the leading shipping point for live stock is unquestionable. Sheep and cattle while waiting shipment will find ample and excellent pasture in the immediate neighborhood, and there being no bar as in other places to cause a risk of detention to vessels with stock on board, they can be taken to San Francisco ready for the slaughter house in from sixteen to eighteen hours after leaving the Cove. Prompt transportation and condition on arrival are matters of vital importance in the eyes of stockmen, and in these respects Shelter Cove is without a rival as a shipping point.
