Again has the Death Angel knocked at the door of the Harlan home in Fortuna, this time taking from the family circle William J.[Johnson] Harlan the fourteen year-old son, who breathed his last a few minutes before six o'clock Wednesday evening. Taken ill last September, Will who was in the eighth grade of the public school, was forced to give up his studies. Uncomplaining he bore his illness with fortitude, although diagnosed as dropsical kidney trouble, the disease made rapid headway. Tuesday night he was very sick and the day following his mother telephoned to Metropolitan to his half brother Chas. A. Betger, who at once came to Fortuna. Mr. Betger realized the lad's condition was critical and phoned Dr. Curtis Falk to come out at once from Eureka he arriving about 4 o'clock. An examination of the boy convinced the doctor there was little he could do as death was even then at the door and as stated above Will passed away at six o'clock. The boy was conscious to the last, knowing each of the loved onces who stood helpless and broken hearted at his bedside. Mr. [Andrew Jackson] Harlan, who is at Point Arena in Mendocino county, was telephoned the sad news but as it would be impossible for him to reach Fortuna for several days he will not be able to attend the funeral, which takes place at one o'clcok this afternoon from his late residence, interment to be in the Odd Fellows' cemetery at Newburg. William Johnson Harlan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Harlan, was born in Fortuna, January 15, 1895. Here, with the exception of fourteen months recently spent by the family in Mendocino county, he has always lived. His untimely death is a hard blow to the loved ones who, only three years ago last September, lost another son, George, who was drowned in the waters of Eel river near the depot. The death of Will is keenly felt by his schoolmates and boy friends, none of whom were prepared for the news of his death. Besides the parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Harlan, decedent leaves three sisters, Nancy, Hazel and Margaret and one brother, Andrew. There are likewise two half-sisters Mrs. Chas. Misner of Arcata and Miss Lottie Betger of San Francisco and one half-brother, Chas. A. Betger of Metropolitan." END Additional Comments: The Humboldt Beacon (Fortuna, California).
