Jean was brought up on the farm in France and educated in the local schools. There was political unrest and many of his uncles and aunts had left for America, some settled in San Francisco, Ca. During a recent French insurection, he, at age twenty years of age, signed up to work his way to America, on a sailing ship. He arrived in San Francisco June 10, 1890, and met with kinsmen. In September of the 1890 he left to go to Delano, Kern County. He entered the employ of a sheepman and three years later took his wages in sheep to start his own herd, which he ranged in Kern, Inyo and Tulare counties. In the meanwhile his father died in France and his mother remarried. She came with his sister Mary, brother Virgil, severals Bernards (her maiden name family) to Delano. During his sheep herding days, he had prospected and in 1899 he sold his sheep and purchased ten acres on Brundage Lane, adjoining Bakersfield and there he began farming. Jean Bertrand was married in East Bakersfield (old Sumner) July 1899, to Lola Bauer, born 26 Jan 1886 a native of Bakersfield and the daughter of Fred Bauer (born Germany) and Belle (Kilbreth) Bauer (born near San Francisco). Lola's parents were stock raisers in Kern County and the alfalfa he raised was a welcome commodity. Lola's father died in 1902 while her mother continued to make her home in Bakersfield, where Lola was reared and educated. With the aid of his wife, he engaged in both farming and stock raising. In 1913 they sold their place on Brundage Lane and purchased forty acres ten miles southwest of Bakersfield in the old river district under the Stine canal, where they again raised alfalfa and grain. He also purchased one hundred and sixty acre ranch two miles above Granite Station which he used for cattle range in the summer, his brand was J. B. (this land was inherited by his daughter Dorothy Helen Bertrad Albitre and passed to her son Dan Leroy Albitre and is now owned by Dan's daughter Andrea.) He also continued to prospect for minerals in Mohave, Breckenridge, Randsburg and Walkers's pass while he and his brother ran a flocks of sheep. As the result of this he and his family were listed on two 1920 fed cences, one for Randsburg and one for Bakersfield). Mr. and Mrs. Bertrand had four living children as of 1946 when he died, as follows: Jean Edward, Josephine Martha, Frederick and Dorothy Jean Edward Bertrand JR born 1901 who took out homesteads in Kern Co and married Livlia Iva Crane and had several children. Josephine Martha Bertrand born 1904. Frederick William Bertrand born 1909, who took out homesteads and married Bertha Etta Carlin and had 7 children. Dorothy Helen Bertrand born 1910 and married Remick Obispo Albitre who took out homesteads and acquired 36 sections of land and had children. Jean Edward Bertrand died 28 April 1948, at Granite Station, Kern Co, CA. His wife Lola lived until 1973 and died 19 Sep at Granite Station, Kern Co, Ca. SOURCES: 1.
