The Blue Mountain Cemetery is located in a ranching community 40 miles north of Bakersfield, CA. To reach the Cemetery from Bakersfield, take 65 Highway North to State Highway 155. Turn East or toward the mountains for approximately 17 miles. The community of Woody is very small and if the Cemetery is not readily found, any community member can direct you. From Highway 99, take State Highway 155 (Garces Highway) at Delano and follow it (crossing Highway 65) until you reach Woody. Box 292 Woody, CA 93287 MEMORIAL STONE The Blue Mountain Cemetery Memorial Stone has been engraved with names of two classifications of people. There are names of residents or family members who were cremated but did not choose to have their ashes buried in the cemetery. The other names are people and families who, though not buried here, have passed through this area and left their mark on the peoples and land. As much as is known, general information is provided to assist the researcher in the ancestral quest. Many of the descendents of these early settlers still live in the general area. Several of the people listed on the Memorial Stone have relatives that are buried in the Cemetery. ROW 1 AVILEZ family, homesteaded East side of Mt. Pheasant. Joe Avilez married 1st Luteria Albitre, 2nd Ester BURKE family, ranched on Greenhorn Mountain VIRGILE BARNARD family, BERTRAND family, from France; homesteaded in Woody; Jean (John) Bertrand married Lola Baurs BIGOT family, purchased Granite Station (sheep shearing station) in 1904 BRONOUGH family, Robert Bronough one of the organizers of Granite School and in 1879 was its first district Clerk CAILLAUD family, settled on the Greenhorn Mountain in 1859. He built what is now known as Eugene Grade ARTHUR T. CANNELL, from the Isle of Man, settled in the Granite area. CALDWELL family, originally homesteaded at Coho (California Hot Springs); later they acquired additional property on Greenhorn Mountain CHERBANNO family, arrived from France and settled in Granite area in 1910 BROOKS DAVIS, Brooks Davis settled on Greenhorn Mountain; Davis Ranger Station is named for him ELDEN, John built Granite Station in 1873. It was a stage stop and sheep shearing station GRISWALD family PETER GARDETT\ family, early settlers in Poso Flat. Aug 15, 1909 Henry and Lena Bohna Gardett were the first couple married in Elberon Christian Church after it was moved to Woody from Glennville. Peter Gardett and wife Agnes, Margaret D. Gardett and Millie Gardett Munsey are all buried in Union Cemetery in Bakersfield CA. MINERVA family MONOTTI family, Constantino and Aurelia gave property for one location of Granite School in 1919 VINCENT MON family immigrated from France in 1875. Vincent Mon was early day sheep and cattle ranchers in foothills on Poso Creek. They provided a stop-over for cattle drives to market in Bakersfield McCAMY family, early settlers in Woody area PEDRO MARVIS family, settled in Poso Flat area NEWCOMB family, Robert & May Crawford Newcomb early settlers in Granite area; grandparents of Robert Newcomb & Joyce Newcomb Varvle NIGHTENGALE family, F.L. Ambroise married Eugenia Marie Faure in 1887 also from France. On the 1900 Fed census, Kern County, 9th Judicial Township, page 9 the Villard family is listed. HARRY WEST family settled in the Poso Flat area BOWDEN WILKINSON family WALTMAN family, “Windy’ Waltman buried at Long Tom Mine, Granite area FRANK BRUNK, 1866-1934, according to family Bible, Marion Franklin Brunk was born Sept 18, 1865 in Woody, CA. He married Oct 20, 1895 Minnie A. Frazier daughter of Benjamin and Parthena Hitchcock Frazier. Frank was son of George Washington and Carolina Bohna Brunk. MINNIE FRAZIER BRUNK MAX MILLER, 1919-1966, son of Gil and Winifred Brunk Miller FRANK BLAKE, a miner that was instrumental in establishing the first school in Woody in 1899. The community honored him by naming it Blake School. Blake School (grades k-8) still provides quality education for the young people in Woody. BILL CHOCHRAN JOHN CHANZE was a miner. He was buried at Long Tom Nine in 1936 VERDO ALONZO CALDWELL, 1877-1979, was from Tennessee. He was the first Caldwell in the area ROSE HITCHCOCK CALDWELL, 1882-1974 JULES CAILLAUD, “Cap” Caillaud was the nephew of Eugene Caillaud. Family settled on Greenhorn Mountain. BERT CHRISTIAN, Bert’s name was Robert. Brother of Ethel Christian Joughin, the family settled in area below Granite Station. Robert was from Isle of Man. He is buried in Kernville, CA. THOMAS FITZGERALD was called “old mountain man”. He built first house in Bakersfield, built the old adobe (historical) in Glennville, CA adjacent to the Fire Station. ETHAN ALLEN GATES, 1844 – 1927, miner and master machinist in Woody area, made his own lathe, was a water and bugle boy during Civil War. The 1900 Fed Census, Kern County, 9th Township, shows he was a cold quartz miner born in Pennsylvania, single, never married and his parents were from New York. He played the violin beautifully, a violinist rather than a fiddler, he would travel around the area entertaining at community affairs and school and church functions. MARY SELANCE BIGOT GRIMAUD – Grimaud family from France, Fed Census, Kern County, Township 3, page 15 lists August Grimaud born 1854, wife Rose in 1850 daughters Louisa in 1886 and Rose in 1890. August, Rose and Louisa were all born in France, daughter Rose in California. AUGUST KRATZMEYER, was a rancher in Granite Area early 1900s PETER LAMBERT was a sheepman that settled in Granite area in 1884 EDOUARD LaFOUNTAINE owned stage line that ran from Bakersfield to Lynns Valley in 1891 FRANK LOOP , 1863-1938. The 1900 Fed Census Kern County 9th Township indicates he was a gold quartz miner born in California in 1875. Frank was an eccentric that homesteaded on Blue Mountain around turn of century to early 1930s. He is buried in Porterville JOHN MONK was an early settler in Granite area JOHN MAIO had a freight line between Bakersfield and Glennville, was drug to death by a mule in 1912 ORRIN MERRY ROBERT AARON SMITH earliest settler at Granite Station location before it was built. He was a vaquero HYPPOLITE SARRET JULIA SARRET ROW 3 TOM WILLIAMS, brother of Nevada Williams Rutledge JANE LEWIS WEST JIM WINGFIELD, raised hogs on Greenhorn Mountain BILL ZELLNER caretaker on James C, Rutledge ranch SOSTON FLORES MOORE, 1857-1883 Soston was the first wife of G. Henry Moore and mother of Virginia G. Moore Seeley and Nathan Moore. She was born in Ventura, CA. EUGENIE WOODY CARVER 1863-1941, Eugenie Woody Carver and husband Alexander Carver buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Glennville. LOUISA WOODY HOWARD 1866-1941, died in Kings County CA VIRGINIA WOODY GREENE 1867-1960 S.A.WOODY 1869-1949 Stonewall Augustus Woody and his wife Odile Grace Enderline Woody are buried in Union Cemetery, Bakersfield. Stonewall was Kern County Auditor for 42 years. The town of Woody is named for his family. The story is that his parents, Dr. Sparrell and Sarah Bohna Woody, were such gracious hosts and so well known throughout the valley and mountain communities that when people talked about that area they referred to it as going to ‘The Woody’s”. The name stuck. Their other son Elmer stayed on the ranch and he, his wife Frances Weringer Woody and sons Ward and Robert continued to work and improve the cattle ranch. He was the first Weringer in the area. Established the Greenback Copper Mine, built a hotel with restaurant and saloon and other visitor attractions. Carl West would tell you his real name is Carl Azavedo although he went by the name Carl West. William Doney – little is known about him. In the 1875 census he was 45 years of age and farmed at Lynns Valley. There is a Doney Hill and Doney Gulch off Blue Mountain Road in Woody. Tom Dooley’s father was Obediah Dooley, a minister that was known as Parson Dooley. George Henry Moore from Cook County Missouri, first Moore in area. Evelena Bohna Gardett taught at Blake School in 1906. She and Henry Gardett were married in the Elberon Christian Church in Woody, August 15, 1909 Jane Thomas, sister of Mary Ann McElroy Rutledge wanted to set aside an area of her homestead for a church. Although she died before this could be accomplished, her heirs honored her wish. The Elberon Christian Church now resides on that acre of land in Woody. Pascal Edward Rutledge was first Rutledge in area. Elizabeth Hitchcock’s children first Hitchcocks to settle in the area James A. Cain was killed at soda Springs, Woody Etta Hofliger, miner’s wife, died in childbirth Uta Bouse Cotta, or Mrs. Dover as she was known to many, was a midwife who assisted many women throughout the mountain communities bring their children into this world. Eliza Jane Moore {EJM) born in Missouri was the daughter of Nathan & Julia Johnson Moore. James M. Wallace was the first Wallace to settle in the area Charles Olin Sipe was caretaker for Alice Bohna Knecht Snow for many years. Henry Bohna’s father, Christian Bohna, is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery Glennville. Bohna children Henry, Sarah, Caroline & Hannah first Bohnas in area. Silas J. “Heiney” Reizenstein was born in Council Bluff, Iowa. At one time he had a homestead in Woody. Later he was caretaker on Woody Ranch. In his younger years he played with John Philip Souza Band. Louis Richard Lemucchi’s parents, Guiseppe “Joe: and Emelia are from Lucca Italy Joyce Marie Shoemate – from a 1940 newspaper clipping provided by Mona Carver and verified by Payne and Son Funeral Home records, this (previously) unmarked grave was determined to be the “Woodcutter’s Daughter”. Older residents remember that a child of a man cutting wood in Glennville died on the way to a hospital in Delano. Joyce had two brothers Junior and Rayborn Howard and two sisters, Eunice Faye and Jessie Willmac. She was six years old and a native of Dolph, Arkansas.
