Rand District Cemetery, Johannesburg, Kern County, California by Joyce Robinstein June 3, 2000 robinstein@ccis.com Located south of US Highway 395 on a hill in Johannesburg, Kern County, California, the cemetery is bounded by Mt. Wells Avenue on the north, Sunset Avenue on the south, Ophir Street on east, and Fremont Street on the west. Thanks to Bart Parker, caretaker of the cemetery, for the following information on the history: "It was established in December of 1896 when J.F. Davis, a gambler who had been shot in a gambling hall in Randsburg, was buried there." Some of the grave markers are faded and unreadable, some of the headstones and crosses are made of wood. Many of the graves have personal items place upon them, such as glassware, pans that were used for panning gold, and rock collections. One site has a mine car as a marker.
