After graduating from Colorado State University, she moved to Kern County, which she called home the rest of her life. A public school teacher for her entire working career, she stood for equality and fairness in every aspect of education. She was especially concerned with and about the mentally challenged students whom she taught for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools for thirty years. She constantly devised approaches and methods to assist them in making their lives meaningful. Her students call often to inquire about her health and ask still for her valuable information. Ruth is survived by her husband Larry. Together they raised five children, Helen, Howard, Sara, William and Jeremy, and happily shared twelve grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Their daughter Sara Beth preceded her in death in 1997. Ruth was a student all of her life. She loved history in all of it many forms and followed politics avidly. She rarely, if ever, failed to vote as not only a citizens responsibility, but also as a citizens privilege. The newspaper was carefully read each day and the television news broadcasts religiously watched. She had definite opinions on most aspects of life and was never afraid to express those opinions, even though often at variance with even her closest friends. She had traveled widely, most recently a month-long trip to Ireland and Scotland, but her favorite place ever visited was Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she was thrilled to see a polished brass sign reading, Scheer on the door of a private home. She also visited Canada many times to see her brother and her many nieces and nephews. Her brother, Forrest, also preceded her in death in 2003. Ruth was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church for long time and supported many of its activities, for one, having directed the youth Christmas Pageant. She will be missed by many in the congregation who admired her speaking voice as a lay reader and her willingness to contribute in many ways. Her sagacious thoughts and opinions along with her zest for life will be missed mightily by all who knew and loved her. Being the private person she was, she has requested no funeral services, but only to remain in the memories of her family and friends.
