Ray Aguilar was born February 26, 1933, in Bakersfield, California, the son of Benjamin and Petra (Ybarra) Aguilar. He attended East Bakersfield High School, where he lettered four years in football and one year in baseball. As a junior, Ray received the Harry Coffee Award, given to the most outstanding football player on the team. He was also voted the best player on the team his senior year and received the Belt Buckle Award for playing four years of football. Years later, Ray was named to the first team all-time East Bakersfield High School football team, at the center position. After graduation in 1951, Ray attended Bakersfield College, where he majored in criminology and lettered as a member of the football team. In 1952, Ray enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After being trained at the Motor Transport School at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he served as a Private in the Korean Conflict. Ray received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On June 1, 1954 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. After active duty, Ray served as a member of the USMC Reserve until October 7, 1960, when he was Honorably Discharged. He remained a Marine until the day he died. Ray was married to Donna Jean Woods on February 23, 1957. They settled in Bakersfield, where he worked as a truck driver for California Motor Express. A long standing member of the Teamsters Union, Ray culminated a successful career in the trucking industry as an Account Executive and a Terminal Manager for a number of local trucking firms. After leaving that industry, Ray spent several years in facilities management, at a local car dealership. Ray and Donna raised two children, both of whom attended local schools. Although divorced in 1988, Ray and Donna were united in their devotion to their children, their love for their families and their commitment to their community. Ray was an avid sports fan and was very active in his retirement. He was fortunate to have counted as among his friends, Robert Chipper Green, who valued his unfailing practicality, vast experience and wise counsel. Ray was also blessed to have had the love, friendship and support of his nephew, Jim Aguilar, who was also his closest friend. Ray is survived by his ex-wife, Donna; son, Michael Anthony and his wife, Abigail of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Michele Diane Carlin of New York City, New York; three brothers, Henry Aguilar and his wife, Mary, Benjamin Aguilar and his wife, Kathy and Robert Aguilar and his wife, Linda, all of Bakersfield, CA. Uncle Ray is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives, as well as countless friends. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 20, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery, 2739 Panama Ln. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Cancer Society is suggested.
