Vivacious and pretty as only a Georgia peach can be, she was the center of attention for her many girl friends and the object of affection in the eyes of all the guys. Then an extremely shy Yankee moved to town and eyed her from afar until he finally got up the nerve to ask her for a date, his first ever. That date was January 6th, 1943, and the guy was Don Allen. After graduating from High School together, Jean attended Valdosta Womens College and Don joined the Navy, but their love continued and culminated in marriage May 1st, 1949, at the Mission Inn in Riverside. That was near their first home, the first of many homes, as Dons work in broadcasting then took them to Nevada, Idaho, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and finally Bakersfield. Jeans career through all those years never changed: Fulltime wife and mother. Her most notable achievement, however, was a lifetime of spreading joy and good cheer to all, and not just to family and close friends, but to all with whom she came in contact; she never met a stranger. She was a mall walker, more than 8,000 miles worth! and she was also a shopper but not so much to buy, but to get to know the sales clerks and share their lives and her joy in Jesus. She was, indeed, a joy as only one who knows the Lord can be. No one ever sang, Oh, How I Love Jesus, with more heartfelt meaning. She and Don had been introduced to Him earlier, but it was when they settled in Bakersfield in 1969 that His Presence and His Word increasingly became a focus of their one life. Blessed with three children, they also knew heartbreak: One child, their first- born son, Don, (better known as Butch) died just before his 29th birthday, Jean is survived, however by daughter, Tricia Rose of Santa Maria; son, Mark Allen of Bakersfield and his wife, Mary Kay; grandchildren, Darren Allen, Anissa Marmolejo and husband, Marc, Mark Allen II and Katie Allen; great- grandchildren, Marc and Isabella Marmolejo. Jean was also survived, though he knows not why, by her husband, Don for whom she was his one-and-only, his lifetime sweetheart, his life, his all! Yes, even as she was a joy to others, her family was her very special joy. We will miss her far more than words can say, but now she knows the infinite and eternal joy of being with her Savior and Lord, as well as her beloved son Butch and all other family members who have gone before. Her life can best be summed up in four words: Blessed to be a blessing. Praise God! That life will be celebrated once again at Calvary Bible Church, 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 20th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to Calvary Bible Church and/or to Optimal Hospice and hug the ones you love!
