John was born on February 14, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the youngest of five children born to Betsy Ellefsen and Hyrum Joseph Amundsen, Sr. His family moved to California when he was very young. He married Elizabeth Francis Gage in 1947, and raised four children during 42 years of marriage. John served in the 24th Infantry Division, 3rd Engineers in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He participated in three D-Day landings and honorably served overseas for 3 years. A professional Petroleum Engineer, John worked for Ferguson and Bosworth for many years and later as a consultant for many major oil producers. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-Day Saints, he served in many callings including 13 years as a temple worker in the Los Angeles Temple. As the son of Norwegian immigrants, he was always proud of his heritage and culture. He also served as a counselor and advisor to his children and many of his extended family. John is survived by his older brother, Hyrum of Provo, UT; and four children, John R. Amundsen, Jr. and wife, Jonell of Bakersfield; Karen Amundsen and husband, Neal Ostler of Park City, UT; Michael Amundsen and wife, Karen of St. George, UT; and Kathy Winn and husband, Clive of Orem, UT; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Friday, November 25th, from 6-8 p.m., at Doughty- Calhoun-OMeara, 1100 Truxtun Ave. Funeral services will be held in the Bakersfield 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, 316 A St., on Saturday, November 26th, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Union Cemetery.
