He and his late wife, Juanita, were married for 70 years. Survivors include: son, John Alving, daughter, Marjory Alving, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Bill grew up near Calistoga. He attended the Tucker School and graduated from Calistoga H.S. in 1929, where he was the editor of the "Stoga" yearbook and Senior Class President. He hiked in Yosemite, fished and climbed Half Dome with his father and sister. Once Bill helped the rangers push the "Fire Fall" over Glacier Point. He attended UC Berkeley, played in the Cal Band and was business mgr. of the Daily Cal. After graduation, in 1933 during the depression, his first job was selling maps. One of his fond memories was a road trip he took with his brother-in-law. In 1934, they drove their aging Dodge over 10,000 miles across the U.S. and into Canada. After the trip, Bill married Juanita Eitel. They shared a house in Oakland with good friends until they were able to purchase their own. He worked for General Petroleum (Mobil Oil) in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Bakersfield where he was active in Kiwanis, the Kern County Chamber of Commerce, and the annual Mobil Economy Run. He organized pack trips into the high Sierra in search of Golden Trout and went duck hunting. Salt Lake City was his next assignment. His territory included Las Vegas; he and Juanita had fond memories of that town in its heyday. He changed jobs in 1961, moved to San Mateo, and traveled the U.S. as head of sales for the Telsta Corp. Retiring in 1976, he continued to enjoy salmon fishing with his long time fishing "buddies", entertaining with Juanita and their many friends and traveling. Their favorite trips were: to the Pyramids in Egypt, a safari in Africa, visiting his parents' home in Sweden and retracing his father's journey down the Yukon River during the Alaska Gold Rush. Listening to classical music was his lifelong pleasure. His life will be celebrated along with his wife, Juanita and his sister, Thyra on March 19, 11:00 a.m. at the Pilgrim Haven Fellowship Hall; 373 Pine Lane, Los Altos, CA 94022. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Napa County Historical Society, 1545 2nd Street, Napa, CA 94559. He will be interred at the Tulocay Columbarium in Napa, CA.
