The Bakersfield Californian 
Joan Ashby
1930 - 2005

Joan went to be with the Lord this last Monday, March 28th. She was a 
California native who was raised in Shafter, and called Bakersfield home. She 
was a charter member of Valley Baptist Church. Through the years she served 
the Lord and her fellow brethren as Director of Vacation Bible School, a 
Sunday School teacher, and the phone lady who made 1000s of calls to invite 
people to Valley Baptist events. She shared her life, love and devotion with 
her husband, JR Ashby, and her six children: Jack Tidwell, Dianna Chambers, 
John Ashby, Jody Werther, Lena Schlick, and Jason Ashby who she is in Heaven 
with today. She also had seven grandchildren, and one great-grandbaby. She and 
JR had many friends that they shared their love of camping and Friday night 
card games with. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. 

There will be a graveside service Saturday, April 2nd for family and close 
friends at 11:30 a.m., at Shafter Cemetery, 18662 Santa Fe Hwy. A memorial 
service for all will follow at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, at Valley Baptist Church, 
4800 Fruitvale Ave. Pastor Roger Spradlin officiating. We will share a time of 
food and fellowship following the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Valley Baptist Church TV 
Ministry.
