Rod peacefully entered into eternal life in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 7, 2005, after a long battle with illness. Rod grew up in Shafter, CA, and moved to Orange in 1969. He spent over 30 years in the newspaper business, working for the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times. Rod was a devoted husband and father who loved all sports and spending time with his family. Rod fought his illness long and hard and did things that no one ever thought possible. He made everyone proud, and his strength and determination have been an inspiration to us all. Rod was happy and full of life to the end. His sense of humor was unmatched and could bring a smile to anyones face. He loved making people laugh and made even the darkest days bright for us all. Rod made the best of any situation and could always find the silver lining. Rod is survived by his loving wife, Jan; two sons, Gregory and David; his father, Dillard Askew and wife, Georgette; one brother, Stan Askew and wife, Betty; one nephew, Jeff Askew; and three step- children, Shawna Grayer and husband Van, Dan Prentice, and Rick Prentice. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Askew. Rod will be sorely missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him. Services will be held Thursday, July 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Colonial Mortuary in Santa Ana and Friday, July 15, at 1:00 p.m. at the Shafter Cemetery followed by a service at Valley Bible Church, Shafter, at 2:30 p.m. We all miss and love you, Rod!
