On December 26, 2005, Ken Chop Barnes passed away unexpectedly when he was hospitalized for complications following a series of falls. Ken was born and reared in the small oil town of Taft, CA where he married his high school sweetheart, Patsy Mae Adams, whom he met in church. They were married for 56 years before her passing in August 2004. He went on to obtain advanced degrees in education with a 40+ year career covering much of California. While enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Ken proudly served his country by teaching English as a second language to Army personnel in Puerto Rico. In the early 60s Ken worked for the U.S. Department of Defense as an educational consultant for all D.O.D. dependents schools in Japan and Korea. His career in education included superintendent positions in both Marin and Sonoma counties, even working as the school principal for the G.E.D. program in San Quentin Prison. Ken will be remembered as a devoted family man with Christian values. His devotion was demonstrated by the loving care he provided to his wife during a long-term progressive illness. He was also a generous and thoughtful man. Ken always knew just the right gift for anyone and would give you the shirt off his back. He regularly made donations to charitable organizations and was a long-term universal blood donor. Ken was a natural athlete, especially enjoying golf, and had hoped after his recent knee surgery that he would be able to return to the sport. As a history major, Ken enjoyed traveling the world and seeing the sites which he taught about in his classrooms. Some of his many hobbies included jewelry making, photography and gardening. He was also an avid reader, shared his beautiful tenor voice singing in church choirs, and he and his wife enjoyed entertaining and dancing the night away with friends. Ken is survived by his son Mark E. Barnes of Bakersfield, CA, and daughter Susanne Barnes McGavin of Petaluma, CA who both loved, cherished, and admired him. Though Ken was born an only child, he considered his wifes siblings as his own. In that respect, he is survived by his sister-in-law Billie Adams of Morro Bay, CA, and brothers-in-law Jon Adams of Sanger, CA, and Joe Adams of Taft, CA. He is also survived by many grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all who knew him. At Kens request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. His family will gather privately to celebrate his life. His ashes will be scattered outside the Golden Gate Bridge where his wifes ashes were also scattered. Memorial contributions may be made to The Society for PSP (the disease which took Pats life) 800-457-4777 / www.psp.org. Ken would also appreciate donations made to any educational fund of choice. The family is being assisted by the Neptune Society of Central California, 661- 325-3963 / 800-894-8882. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 1/1/2006.
