The youngest of six children, Kenneth Hoffman Bates was born April 2, 1916, to John and Dorah Bates, in Tuolumne, California. Ken was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Murdock. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara; his son, Kenneth and his wife, Marsha of Colorado Springs; his daughter Susan Bates-Harbuck and her husband John of Sandpoint, Idaho; and his daughter Patricia and her husband Rick Hafenfeld of Lemhi, Idaho. Surviving grandchildren are David, Kevin and Alexandria Bates, Kristin Harbuck and Christopher Murdock. Ken is also survived by Ria Maaskant, who was welcomed into his home as a Dutch foreign exchange student and her husband, Adrian, of Tehachapi, CA. Ken graduated from Tuolumne Union High School, where he was the captain of the football team. Ken attended the University of California at Berkeley where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1937. This was followed by a LLD degree from Boalt Law School, also at University of California at Berkeley in 1940. He remained an ardent Golden Bear football fan. Ken then went on to serve in the United States Army with the Signal Corps and later as an attorney with the Judge Advocate General. During World War II, Ken served his country as a Captain in France and Belgium. He came to Bakersfield in 1946 and began his law practice. Ken was a member of the Kern County Bar Association for more than fifty years. During his practice, he was associated with his longtime partner Lou Deadrich, as well as Barney Gill, Jack Lund, Jack Stewart and Tom Tutton. He served as a Special Hearing Officer for the U.S. Department of Justice and qualified as an attorney and counselor, solicitor, advocate and proctor of the United States District Court, Eastern District of California. Ken was a charter member and past president of Oildale Kiwanis, where he had 38 years of perfect attendance and was awarded life membership. He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon. He served on the Board of Directors at Bakersfield Country Club and in retirement volunteered at Gleaners and Meals on Wheels. Ken also participated in SIRS (Seniors in Retirement), Bakersfield Country Club (where he and Barbara actively participated in his favorite activity, golf), Joaquin Squares (where he and Barbara square danced), and Kern Winnigades (where he and his wife Barbara indulged in their passion for travel with fellow RV'ers) Ken leaves behind kind and wonderful memories with his friends and family. He takes with him his reputation for honesty, the love of his friends and family, and a sense of humor that lifted the spirits of those around him. In his life he did much to improve the world.
