In June of 1993 he moved to Burlington, North Carolina, where he passed away December 19, 2005. His brother Chris of Sedro-Woolley, WA, flew back on Christmas Eve to make arrangements and on January 4, 2006, held a celebration of Dougs life, where Dougs wonderful friends attended to say, Farewell my friend. In December 1999, Doug suffered a debilitating industrial injury, crushing all the bones in both of his feet. He was wheelchair- bound and after some time was able to get around using a cane. He suffered from ongoing pain and depression until his passing. His love of music and art kept him afloat for many years. In his last years through his wonderful pastor, Kent Garner, Doug accepted Jesus as his Savior and brought Jesus into his heart. Amen. Doug attended Highland Elementary, Standard Junior High and graduated from North High in 1965. He graduated from Bakersfield College and received his BA from Chouinard Art Institute, a Walt Disney School in Valencia, California. Bill Ryan, Dougs art teacher at North High, said Doug was one of the most talented students in his 40-year career. Doug was very gifted and talented in sports. In his sports scrapbook, I saw nothing but first place ribbons while he was in Highland and Standard schools. He lettered in varsity football, basketball and tennis. He was so good he played varsity football his freshmen year. Coaches Turk and Bootman said he could have gone pro. Doug was also a very talented singer and musician. He played all guitars as well as fiddles, banjos, mandolins, ukes, keyboards and even clarinet and saxophone. Doug had a talent to master whatever he took on in life. I remember him playing the trubadour with an up- and- coming LA group. He jammed a lot with Three Dog Night, Jo Jo Gun, and Paul Revere and the Raiders. Professionally he played for Jimmy Buffet, Stevie Nicks, Roger Miller, Hoyt Axton and the LeLands. Doug played many Bakersfield lounges as a single act and in Burlington, NC. He also played in many groups in Bakersfield, such as Reggie & Alex, The Poor Boys, Pleasant Company, just to name a few. Back in his college days, when he was in the groups The Amoebas, and The Black Glass, they always won the Battle of the Bands. I remember those groups playing under the open canopy at Lake Ming. God what wonderful times those were. I remember Doug and Sam Rawls and the good times at the KC Steak House and at Mike and Jackie Pierces Dingledorfs. Doug was also a genius in wood crafting, specializing in carvings, brass and mother of pearl inlaying. He was also an avid fisherman, hunter, backpacker, gunsmith, reloader, horseman, bull rider, photographer, songwriter and poet. I remember backpacking down Long Valley into the south fork of the Kern River, and Doug hyper-extended his knee. We had so much fun. I almost died packing him back out. Doug never married or had any children. What a tragedy because he loved children so, especially Sharon Jellums five little girls. He was preceded in death by our mother, Mary, in 1990 and our father, Dick, in 1996. He is survived by me, his brother, Chris and wife, Sandra of Sedro-Woolley, WA; his aunt, Peggy Anderson of Sequim, WA; cousins, April Downing, Carolee Wilson and Julie Tatum of the Seattle area, Marilyn Straumifjord of San Diego, CA, and Sharon Anderson of Rifle, CO. Doug leaves a wonderful legacy behind and he will be missed by all who knew him. Everybody I met in NC loved him and said he was one of a kind, and what a character he was and so talented too. A lady friend of Dougs, Lou Ann Summers of Burlington, NC, wants to look into starting a foundation in Dougs name to honor his poetry, art, music, songwriting and photography. She is in the process of burning CDs of Dougs music. Some of Dougs fondest memories are of Echo Park, his apartment on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, Kings Beach Lake Tahoe and of John McNalleys on the Kern. Doug and I took our last trip together in 1976, going to Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Bali, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Manila. We were gone for six weeks and had a ball. Doug had a beautiful mini cooper back in the 60s, painted a candy apple lime green by Jim Burris and tuck and rolled in TJ. While in New Zealand, we rented a brand new mini cooper S, with the steering wheel on the right and driving on the left side of the road. We had so many laughable near misses at every turn, but we made it. He fell in love in Hong King and it was hard to get him on the plane to Tokyo. Friends dont fret, for Doug has winged it on up and outta here to be with his Savior, family and friends. He is in no more pain, and in a much better place. To my brother Doug, I miss your funny antics, your wonderful laughter, and your beautiful smile. I love you little big brother. Your brother, Chris. Memorial can be made to any A.A. of your choice. Inquires about Doug can be made calling Chris at (360) 856-5556. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 1/29/2006.
