"Pete" 1917 - 2005 Donald F. Bernard (Pete) June 8, 1917 - October 7, 2005 A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 14, 2005, at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 4600 Stockdale Highway in Bakersfield. Pete Barnard was the last-surviving member of his family of nine, having been preceded in death by his wife Tina, parents John Harvey and Letha, and siblings Ray, Wilma, Bonnie, Keith, Ted, and Truett. Pete was the fourth of the seven children and raised mostly in the small town of Ovalo, near Abilene, Texas. He grew up a poor sharecropper's son but said they always had plenty to eat and wouldn't give up his boyhood youth for anything. Pete graduated from high school in Ropesville, Texas (near Lubbock), where he met Tina. He enjoyed sharing a wealth of quips and anecdotes, not only about his growing-up years, but also about numerous adventures traveling back and forth between Texas and California by hitching rides on highways and freight trains during the Great Depression. After marrying Tina Alexander in 1941, they moved to Bakersfield, where Pete had already begun managing a Union 76 station, where he worked a few years before beginning work as a fireman and engineer for Santa Fe Railroad, with whom he transported troops and material across the Tehachapis during World War II. In 1950 he began farming with his brothers Keith and Ted, a partnership that continued many years. More recently he farmed in partnership with Bud Jones, which continued until Pete retired at the age of 75. Pete is survived by his children Donya Quiguer and her husband Claude of Montolieu, France; Kent and wife Linda, and Bruce and wife Margie, all of Bakersfield; grandchildren Heidi and Stéphane; Nicole, Lindsay, and Amy; Ben, Angela, Evan, and Alissa; and great-grandchildren Oscar, Benjamin, Ethan, and Baylee; and numerous nephews and nieces, of whom David, Danny, Don, and Brownie were particularly close to their Uncle Pete. Pete would want and his family want to express deep gratitude to Pete's and Tina's special helpers- Margo Hernandez and her sister Julie-for many, many years of faithful, loving care. We all will miss Pete's loving generosity, wisdom, homespun true stories, and wonderful, ever-present sense of humor. We love you, Dad-dad!
