Joan was born to Ted and Edith Hougham on December 24, 1927, in Bakersfield, CA. She was a proud graduate of Bakersfield High School, class of 1945. She went on to complete her education at Bakersfield Jr. College and San Jose State University where she earned her Teaching Credentials. After graduation she moved to Arvin to begin farming with her husband David and was later blessed with two wonderful daughters. In 1962 Joan began teaching elementary school for El Tejon School District. She spent the next 24 years touching the lives of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children, with her quiet style of teaching and sincere wisdom. Upon retiring Joan split her time between her family and fishing along the creek at her cabin in Balance Rock. She was extremely proud of the fact she was the best trout fisherman in the family. She was also an avid Dodger baseball fan and treasured Dewar's chocolate sodas with ice milk. In her final years Joan devoted all her time to her beloved family, especially her grandchildren. Her happiest times were spent watching their sporting events, dance recitals, Aggie Football Games and baking goodies for special family gatherings. She loved being surrounded by her family. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, Eugene Hougham. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and David Frank of Corpus Christi, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Lyn and Bud Beurmann of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Aaron Bland,Katie Beurmann, and Kenneth Beurmann; step- granddaughters, Julie Dugan and Jenna Husband; and great-granddaughters, Sage and Layla Husband. Friends are invited to join the family for services Friday, October 21st, at 11:30 a.m., to celebrate Joans life.
