Marta was married for 26 years to Bob Meyer, who together with Marta, shared a deep passion not only for flying but also for helping introduce others, especially the youth, into the engineering sciences. She was known for her generosity and self-sacrifice with helping others in the aviation and educational communities. Marta had a flair for a no-nonsense attitude in getting things done and she let no obstacle stand in her way. Ask any man or woman who had the good fortune of knowing her and they will all testify to her zeal towards life. Marta was an inspiration to women in general, and women in aviation in particular, and was well known for her achievements in bettering our society. Marta resided in Tehachapi with her husband for the last year and a half. Prior to this, they had lived in Quartz Hill for the rest of the 26 years that they had called California their home. She has left behind her parents, Ruth and Augie of Hancock, N.H., two sisters, Ilsa of Gaithersburg, Md., and Augusta of Clayton, N.Y., one brother, Carl, who resides in Kingman, Ariz., and five nephews, two nieces, and one grandniece. Marta was born and raised on Long Island, N.Y. She attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from which she graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering. Marta met her husband Bob while a co-op student at NASA Langley, Va. They were married in 1979. She was appointed chief engineer at NASA Dryden in October 2001 after serving other positions including director of Flight Operations, director of Safety and Mission Assurance, deputy director of Flight Operations, deputy director of Aerospace Projects and Project Manager for the F-16 XL Supersonic Laminar Flow Control project. Marta and her husband were the two flight engineers assigned to fly in the SR-71 high-speed flight research program at Dryden. She was the first female crewmember from NASA or the Air Force — and the second woman — to fly in one of the triple-sonic SR- 71s. Marta was also an FAA-certified flight instructor with over 6,000 flight hours and in addition held an FAA Inspector Authorization license. As a member of the International Aerobatic Club, Marta was a USA Unlimited Team member for two years and the team manager this year in Spain where she was awarded the Most Valuable Volunteer award. She had been a fixture in the aerobatic community for over 20 years. Among other honors, in 1996 she received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for exceptional service in flight operations and project management in support of several national flight research programs. She was also awarded the Aerospace Educator Award in 1998 from Women in Aerospace and in 1992 received the Arthur C. Fleming Award in the Scientific Category. A frequent participant in education programs, particularly for girls, she was a role model for young women interested in entering into technical fields. She was loved very much by very many. Marta will indeed be sorely missed by the friends she has touched.
