Dorothy was born in Bernie, Missouri and passed away in Bakersfield, California after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard, and is survived by her husband, James; her daughter, Nancy Carter; and her sons, David, and his wife, Voni, and Steven and his wife, Linda; her sisters, Wanda Adkins of Dexter, Missouri and Wilma Lock of Banning, California also survive Dorothy. She also leaves behind her loving grandchildren, Kristi and Kevin Bratcher, Lauren and Madison Carter, and Cherise Bratcher. Dorothy and Jim were married in the Las Vegas Baptist Church December 26, 1946 and then made their home in Bakersfield. After a short career in the business world, Dorothy became a full-time homemaker and a partner in the family business, Automotive Radiator Service. She spent many years in volunteer service for the Physician's Community Hospital and was extremely active with the Cub Scouts and the other various activities her children were involved in. Dorothy enjoyed reading, traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and Friday evening dinners at Mexicali restaurant. But it seemed that she found the most enjoyment in life by giving to others. Her days were planned according to what she could do to help her husband, children, and grandchildren. She showed her love and dedication to her family through her fabulous cooking and warm family gatherings. Throughout her long battle with the crippling disease, Dorothy remained strong in spirit and is truly an inspiration to all of us. Through her pain and fear - the gentleness, kindness and graciousness that exemplified her life never left her - this is her legacy. Mom, Grandma Dot, - we love you so much and we will miss you each and every day, but we have comfort because we know you are now in the arms of the Lord. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Dorothy's name to the Alzheimer's Association. Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 9/27/2005.
