Sept. 8, 1937 - Dec. 17, 2005 Shirley was born in Witchita, KS to Geathen and Marie Brown. At a very young age, Shirley moved to Bakersfield to start a new life. She graduated from East High in 1957 & started working in the medical field as an LVN at San Joaquin Hospital. In 1967 she decided to become an R.N., and started attending classes at BC. In 1971 she graduated from BC at the top of her class with honors. The family moved to Fresno where she became a surgery nurse, then a surgery supervisor. In 1978 she moved to Meridian and became Director of Nurses at Colusa Community Hospital. In 1988 she became Director of Nurses at Mad River Community Hospital. She ended her career back in Bakersfield at Healthsouth in 2003. Shirleys main goal was to take care of the sick and be an advocate for her nurses and patients. She was a great Director. She was the perfect example that nurses are Angels of Mercy. Shirley is preceded in death by her father, Geathen Eldon Brown, Mother Marie Inez Brown, RN, brother Gary Brown, son Stuart Wayne Skelton. She is survived by her son Brian Skelton & wife Julie, grandchildren Allison Skelton, Stuart Skelton, Jr. & John Skelton, ex-husband Bob Skelton, many extended family members & friends. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, December 24th at 1:00 p.m. at 13208 Warrenton Ave. All are welcome. Shirley will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
