Bainbridge Services: Wed., June 15, 2:00 p.m. Charles G. Bainbridge passed away Thursday, June 2nd, 2005, in Bakersfield. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Bakersfield on Wednesday June 15th at 2:00 p.m. Charles was born September 25, 1919, in Redding, Iowa. After graduating from Oskaloosa High School, he attended William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he graduated with a degree in History and excelled in football and track. In 1987, he was inducted into the William Penn Hall of Fame for his excellence in football. Charles began a long career in education with his first job teaching at Seymore High School in Iowa as well as coaching football and track. When WWII broke out, Charles joined the Marine Corps and served as an officer in the 5th Amphibious Corps in the Pacific seeing action in Saipan and Iwo Jima among other battle sites. He married his beloved wife of 60 years, Jean Emily Blackford, in 1943. After the war, Charles went back to teaching in Iowa at Guthrie Center and Oskaloosa. He also obtained his Masters degree in History at the University of Iowa. In 1952, Charles and Jean moved to Bakersfield where Charles accepted a teaching job at Bakersfield High School. He taught history, coached football and track, and was director of the Cadets. While there, he also continued to serve in the Marine Reserves. Charles finished his years at Bakersfield High as counselor. Following this rewarding period of service, Charles became Dean of Students at Foothill High in 1965. Two years later, he became Assistant Principal and remained there until he retired in 1981. Charles and Jean relocated to Cayucos upon retiring. They enjoyed many years living on the ocean, traveling, and entertaining family and friends. We would like to thank the Westchester House where Charles resided this last year. He is survived by sons, Dennis, Jerry, and Robert; their respective spouses, Peggy, Connie, and Linda; and grandchildren, Tom, Jenny, Claire, and Andrew; as well as brother, William F. and his wife, Lois, of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
