He is survived by Carol Hernandez of Bakersfield; Jane Banner, Janet Banner, grandson, Clayton Jacobs, all of Lancaster; brother, Joe Banner and nephews, Trevor and Jordan Banner, all of the Sacramento area. After serving in the U.S. Navy and graduating from college at William Jewel, Dick headed west as an aeronautical engineer with N.A.S.A. at Edwards, where he enjoyed a rewarding career in research. He was an active member in both the United Methodist Church and Ys Hikers. The avid outdoorsman constantly pursued passions for backpacking and climbing, in addition to lifelong interests in computers, environment, music and photography. Retirement from government service prompted relocation and a business opportunity in Bakersfield, known as Bigfoot Mountaineering. Later endeavors included real estate, bookkeeping, and income tax. Many years of mountain pleasure were savored on Breckenridge. Remembered as a solitary man, Richards unique vitality for life will be cherished. A private, family gathering is planned and condolences may be sent to obann@lightspeed.net. The family suggests any donations may be made to the Sierra Club.
