Manuel was born on July 1, 1926 in Pueblo, Colo. to Tobias and Consuelo Barela. He served in the United States Navy during World War II at Pearl Harbor and experienced many close calls during his military service. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Culver City for 32 years. Manuel loved to ride a Harley in his younger years and was always tinkering with cars. He enjoyed playing “Chicken Foot” with his Nazarene Church group and loved Mexican food. Manuel’s faith was the guiding force in his life. He was a faithful worker in the Tehachapi Church of the Nazarene and helped Pastor Gollnick establish the Stallion Springs Church. Manuel is survived by his wife, Clareen Barela of Tehachapi; daughters, Katherine Barela of Denver, Colo., Beverly Rubalcava of Los Angeles, Doris Fossen of Acton and Wanda Campbell of Veneta, Ore.; sons, Lloyd Barela of Canyon City, Colo. and Tim Barela of Palmdale; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers, Roy Esquibel and Benjamin Esquibel, both of Pueblo, Colo.; stepson, Mike Weast of Van Nuys; and stepdaughter, Patti Weast of Lake View Terrace. Pastors John Gollnick and Jerry Powers will officiate at the service. Interment will follow at Tehachapi Public Cemetery, Eastside. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
