Barnes Services: Sunday, May 15, 2 p.m. Ralph A. Barnes, 77 of Bakersfield, formerly of Burbank, CA, died May 1st, peacefully at his home after a three year courageous battle with cancer. His only son, Phra Archan Dennis Gervais was present at his passing. Ralph bravely served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. During the war he was in charge of boosting morale for many tired and lonely servicemen. Ralph was a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 42 years. He was active in A.A. in both the Burbank and Bakersfield areas. Ralph had owned a successful florist shop, Banner Florist, in Glendale for over 30 years, where he had given refuge to many alcoholics and drug addicts seeking sobriety. Many of whom are still sober today and consider Ralph their very dear friend. Once He moved to Bakersfield in 1991, he became a very active member of our A.A. community. Ralph had also been a practicing Buddhist for over 30 years and was a member of Wat Thai Buddhist Temple, in Los Angeles. He helped establish Buddhist Temples in both Bakersfield and Christ Church, New Zealand. Ralph was cremated in accordance to Buddhist tradition on May 3rd. The service was presided over by The Most Venerable Phra Kru Satuwat Setthakit Samahito, who is the abbot of Wat Nark Prok, Bangkok, Thailand, where Ralph's ashes will be laid to rest. There are not many, who came in contact with Ralph that did not benefit from his kindness, generosity, compassion and wisdom. He will be dearly missed by all his many, many friends. A memorial service will be held in his memory on Sunday, May 15, 2005, at the Alano Club, 1001 34th St, at 2:00 p.m. in Bakersfield. Another Buddhist memorial service will be held later in June.
