As one of the Founders and President of the Junior Baseball Association (JBA) and later, the Central Section Commissioner for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), he played a significant role in the outstanding athletic programs offered, not only in Bakersfield, but throughout California. He will truly be remembered as a great teacher, coach, and friend. Born in Morenci, Arizona, on January 4, 1919, Carl, the son of Italian immigrants, went on to graduate from the University of Arizona where he not only excelled in football, baseball and basketball, but also served as Student Body President. Following college, Carl proudly served in World War II in the U.S. Army, 1st Cavalry, Tank Division. It was there that his skills as a teacher became readily apparent and the Army gave him his first teaching position as a Tank Operations instructor. After the war, in 1946, Carl and his wife, Betty Lou moved to Bakersfield where they raised their three sons, Richard, Steve and Bruce. Carl enjoyed a long and successful career as a teacher, assistant principal, coach and director of athletics at Bakersfield High School where his basketball and baseball teams won numerous leagues titles. In recognition of his numerous contributions to Kern County athletics, Carl was inducted into the Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
