Mildred Bogle Aitken was born in Atwood, Tennessee on February 20, 1916 and passed away on March 20, 2005, in Bakersfield. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth and her two stepchildren, Darlene Raine of Lake Almanor and Karen McGee of Modesto. Mrs. Aitken is also survived by her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She attended the McKenzie Tennessee schools. After graduation she studied nursing at University of Tennessee in Memphis. When she received her RN degree she worked as a nurse in the Universitys John Gaston Hospital. When World War II broke out she joined the Army Nurse Corp and was sent to England during the blitz and later to France. She was attached to the 68th General Hospital in the City of Nancey. When she returned to the United States after the war she attended Vanderbilt Universitys Public Health Nursing Program receiving a Masters degree in August of 1947. While at Vanderbilt she became acquainted with a dentist from Bakersfield who urged her to apply to the Kern County Health Department. Mildred served Kern County as a Public Health Nurse for a period of time, then joined the Standard Oil Company as a visiting nurse for 16 years. Returning to the Health Department she retired from nursing in 1983. Mildred married Kenneth Aitken on April 1, 1950. They lived at 602 Washington for many years. They traveled in Europe, the Orient, China, Russia and finally Egypt. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made in Mrs. Aitkens name to your favorite charity or the Alzheimers Association. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
