Herschel Edward Borders
July 27, 1932 – March 28, 2005

Former longtime Simi Valley resident (November 1963 to October 2004) Herschel 
Edward Borders passed away Monday, March 28, at his new home in Tehachapi. His 
wife Pat; children John, Mark, Dan and his wife Jill, Ta Leah, Alanna; and 
brother Gene with his wife Pearl, were all at his side.

Hersh was a multi-talented man. His business for almost 50 years was designing 
and building cabinets and furniture. His hobbies were art, music, writing 
poetry and song.

He was a Korean War veteran, enlisting in the Army in July of 1949. He served 
in Company “A” 13th Engr. Combat Battalion. Sgt. Herschel Borders served two 
years overseas in Japan and Korea.

Upon returning to the United States, he served in the Military Police until 
his honorable discharge on Sept. 8, 1952. Among his many medals, he received 
five Bronze Service Stars.

He is survived by his wife Pat of 53-plus years of Tehachapi; sons, John of 
Tehachapi, Mark of Las Vegas and Dan and wife Jill of Tehachapi; daughters, Ta 
Leah Borders and Alanna Reynolds, both of Simi Valley; grandchildren 
Christine, Ryan, Sean, Dylan, Miranda, Vickey, Kassidy, and Zoey; brothers 
Edward and wife Phyllis of Illinois, Paul and wife Edna of Tennessee and Gene 
and wife Pearl of Illinois; sister, Lucille Coomer of Illinois; and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

All of his family and friends will miss his love, laughter and great humor — 
and just being there for all of them.

Herschel’s prayer was that his family and friends would meet him again in 
heaven.

This is an excerpt from his many writings: “Happiness is having everything to 
live for, yet everything to die for.”

A memorial service will be held on April 7 at 1 p.m. at the Cornerstone 
Community Church in Simi Valley. Pastor Francis Chan will officiate at the 
service.

Wood Family Funeral Service handled the cremation arrangements.
