Burger July 15, 1919 - August 16, 2005 Services; Tues., Aug. 23, 9:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 23rd, at 9:30 a.m., at Union Cemetery for Don Burger who died August 16, 2005, in Tehachapi. Pastor Dale Cornell of Liberty Christian Church will officiate. Don was born in Colorado and had six siblings. They moved to California where they all stayed and made their homes. Don was a tile setter by trade and then a contractor. His imagination and talent built and left many beautiful homes all of which had at least one secret little place to hide your treasures. He also designed and built his custom Burger cars. Don was active for many years in dragboat racing with his boat The Woodpecker. In the 60s he was the champion in Top Blown Gas category and held the world record for several years. He was also with Ford Motor Offroad Racing with his dear friend, Bill Stroppe. Don donated his time and supplies with his friends building a hospital, school and housing in Mexico. He had a tough exterior but inside was an open and caring man who was there if you needed him. He lived his life as he wished and still had projects going to the very end. We were blessed to have been in this mans life. Memories are pictures in the heart. They will live and be cherished but his presence will be greatly missed. Don is survived by his loving wife, Elva, who gave him the stability and strength to finally let down his guard and let people love him for who he was. His big sister, Cecille Colvin, who has shared his home and filled his days; his daughter, Trudy Burger; son, Donald E. Burger; stepsons, Kevin, Larry and Jeff Moody and families. He leaves five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He had a special bond with Maleik Wright who thought his great-grandpa was a farmer and he wants to be just like him. Visitation is scheduled Monday from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. Goodnight Sweetheart Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara Funeral Directors Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 8/21/2005.
