His daughter Mary Ann and a friend read him the Salvation prayer and at the end of this prayer they asked him if he believed that Jesus Christ is the son of God and his salvation to which he replied, “Oh, Yes. And Jesus is my best friend.” Gus was born in Durango, Mexico on Sept. 28, 1917, to Augustine and Liboria Canales. His father was killed during the Mexican revolution. His mother then moved to Montrose, Colo., bringing Gus and his little sister, Mary Lou, to live with relatives. His mother married Albert Mendoza and from that union had two children, Ralph and Jessie Mendoza. At age 16, Gus came to live in Monolith with relatives where he also found employment at the Monolith Cement Plant. He worked in several areas until he settled in the kiln department and become a foreman. He retired at the age of 62 after 46 years of employment. He was a welter-weight boxer until he got married. In 1941, he married Lucy Aguirre of Bakersfield and they had five children. Gus liked to ride horses, go boating and to fish. Gus was a member of the Tehachapi Moose Lodge and Club Ideal. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling the western states and into Mexico. Gus was a good and honest man, ready to to help or assist those in need. He will be missed by all who loved him. Gus is survived by daughters, Eloise Rhodes and her husband Philip of Tehachapi, Mary Ann Camilli of Orangevale, and Irene Nickells and her husband Lynn of Canyon Country; son, Augustine Canales Jr. of Tehachapi; grandchildren, Jocelyn Boneso, Jason, Jeff and Janetta Leiva, Monica and Adrian Pena, Audrey and Reisa Wade, and Alison and Chris Murry; and 18 great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Bernice Moore; sister, Mary Lou Valdez; and brother, Ralph Mendoza. Father Joel Davadilla officiated at the service. Interment followed at Tehachapi Public Cemetery, Westside. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
