Arthur William Carls 
May 28, 1922 - Dec. 13, 2005 

Visitation for Arthur William Carls will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 
Niles Street) on Friday, December 16, 2005 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral 
services will be held in the Basham Funeral Care Chapel on Saturday afternoon, 
December 17, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Riverside National 
Cemetery. Arthur was born May 28, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York and he passed 
away December 13, 2005 in Bakersfield, California. Arthur is survived by his 
loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Carls; son and daughter-in-law, Art and Cathy 
Carls; son and daughter-in-law, John and Debbie Carls; daughter and son-in-
law, Denise and Al Welte; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Martin Millett; 
son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Lisa Carls; 15 grandchildren; 4 great- 
grandchildren as well as numerous other family members and friends. After 
graduating from high school, Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Army. His service 
included Pearl Harbor and the D-Day invasion at Normandy. Arthur was stationed 
at numerous bases throughout the South Pacific, Europe and Africa. He was 
awarded three Purple Hearts along with numerous citations for this service. On 
July 28, 1947 Arthur married his loving wife, Shirley Loraine Hill. Arthur and 
Shirley moved to Bakersfield in 1951. He retired from Title Insurance & Trust 
Company. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and Disabled Veterans 
of America. He was loved by all that knew him and he will be deeply missed. 
The family wishes to thank the staff of San Joaquin Community Hospital for
