Dorothy, Christian wife and mother, Gift of God to her time and community was born in Los Angeles on November 12, 1922. She was adopted by Otto and Grace Clausnitzer at the age of six months and began exploring life in her Beale Park neighborhood of Bakersfield. Her father, Otto, was a railroad conductor and, later, yardmaster for Santa Fe here in Bakersfield. Her mother, Grace, was a Harvey Girl. They cherished this young child and Dorothys first years were surrounded by the comforts of a home of piano lessons, puppies and the First Baptist Church on Truxtun Avenue. Dot grew as the girl next door, nurturing young friendships that would become lifelong. After graduating from Kern County Union High School in 1940, she met Clyde Clemens prior to his WWII Naval Enlistment. At the time, Dorothys family lived in the house behind The Shoe on Chester Avenue and her true and lifelong love was a Bakersfield City Fire Department Engineer stationed directly across the avenue. They married in April 1946, after Clydes honorable service to his country. They bought a home in the Homemaker Park section of this city and celebrated their 50th anniversary before her husbands passing in 1999. In the years between, she worked in clerical and secretarial positions for Brocks, Motor City and Three-Way Chevrolet (where she was on the second floor of the auto dealership on Chester Avenue when the cantilevered windows gave way to the earthquake in 1952), Shell Oil, and KLYD Channel 17. She served on the Spade Cooley Jury, was recording secretary of the Bakersfield Women's Club, enjoyed summers of camping and fishing with Clyde, her son and friends, and always participated in FBC activities as rehearsal pianist and choir member, singing in many performances of Handels Messiah chorus. After her husbands retirement, they traveled the U.S., visiting family in Ohio, seeing Gettysburg, Washington D.C., Memphis and Nashville and developing a great love for Hawaii and its culture. She was a dancer with a local Polynesian group. They also began attending services at Calvary Bible Church, where Clyde accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and together they worshiped Him and were active members in this loving church family. Dorothy is survived by her son, Gregory Clemens of Bakersfield; daughter, Peggy McCoy, and her husband, Jack of Modesto; grandchildren and great-grandchildren from Florida to Central California. Visitation will be Friday, November 25th from 9:00 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to the Optimal Hospice Foundation 4800 Stockdale Hwy. #215 Bakersfield, CA 93309.
