No visitation, private internment. Bill was born in Bakersfield, California on December 16, 1936, to Ruby Virginia and David Crockett Collup. He attended Standard Elementary and Bakersfield High School. He met and married Mary Ellen Grider, the love of his life, in 1954 while working at the Fox Theater. Bill is survived by his wife, Mary of 51 years; and son, Steve and his wife, Athena; and grandsons, Sam, Seth and Levi; son, Clay and Evelyn; and granddaughters, Lauren and Cassandra; and son, Jared; and grandsons, Brandon and Justin; sisters, Pat Park of Fresno and Dixie Schroeder and husband, John of Bakersfield; and numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished. Bill also loved the Lord who he accepted as his personal savior in 1972 while watching a Billy Graham Crusade on TV! One of Bill's proudest achievements was his Marine Corp service from 1954 to 1958. His life work began in 1962 with the Kern County Fire Department. He retired as a Captain in 1991. Bill was a beloved father figure to more than just his own three sons and grandchildren. He loved his annual fishing trips to Alaska, camping trips with the family, the Rendezvous' with the Bakersfield Muzzle Loaders, and the reunions with the Marines who served with him on the USS Boxer. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Optimal Hospice Care at 4800 Stockdale Highway or RiverLakes Community Church Building- on-Faith fund, 4301 Calloway Drive, Bakersfield.
