Penny Pierce passed away in Bakersfield, California on November 30, 2005. Penny was able to fill many lives with her laughter, love and humor but her life was not a joke. She grew up with three sisters and four brothers in West Covina and attended local schools. She moved with her family to McFarland and began lifelong friendships. She graduated from McFarland High School in 1965. The Conklins moved to Pond and Penny enrolled in the nursing program at Bakersfield College. She worked for doctors Montgomery, Keagy and Wheaton. She loved caring for others and had a gift for making people feel better. She met Neil Pierce in 1968 and his admiration for her won her over and they married on May 5, 1972. Penny and Neil lived in Pond for many years and had various business adventures including owner and operator of The Ranch House restaurant in McFarland. It was known to family and friends as the best prices in town because so often Neil or Penny would say, This is on the house. When the restaurant closed they moved to Long Beach and enjoyed their neighbors and friends. Everyone was happy when they decided to move to Bakersfield and back into the daily moments of the family Penny so cherished. They were a generous, fun loving, couple and Penny was a devoted wife. They were married for almost 25 years until Neil passed away on September 17, 1996. The next years of Pennys life were spent helping out at the Bakersfield Airport gift shop where she made a difference with her warmth and kindness. She always had a joke or an antidote to share with people passing through. Penny loved hobbies and crafts such as knitting, crocheting and jewelry making. She shared her talents as co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 318. Her self confidence and inner beauty served as an example to the girls. She will always be remembered to the scouts and their mothers as Aunt Penny. Penny also loved to travel whether it was a trip to Costco or Canada she loved to be on the go. Somehow Penny was able to navigate her trips to include Casinos where her favorite game was the slots. Pennys presence of self-giving and fun will be missed by many friends and family that include: father, Henry Conklin; brothers, Daryl and wife, Eileen, Henry and wife, Patty; sisters, Hilda Glidewell, Charlotte and Jim Marengo, Jessie and Ken Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hubert and Ginny Pierce and sister-in-law, Sue Berry. She was preceded by her husband, Neil Pierce; her mother, Loraine and brothers, Bill and Tim Conklin and brother-in- law, Fred Glidewell. She was treasured by 25 nieces and nephews, 39 great- nieces and nephews, 7 great-great-nieces and nephews and their families along with many, many friends. Pennys humor and broad smile brightened the lives of many and she will be deeply missed. Visitation will take place 1-5 p.m., Sunday, December 4th, at Hillcrest Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd.; service 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 5th, at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Pastor Kenneth Noel will preside. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Pennys honor to the American Diabetes Association. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 12/4/2005.
