Howard was born March 9, 1919 in Altus, Okla. to parents Luther and Elizabeth Cornelius. He attended Wasco High School and married his childhood sweetheart, Minnie Pauline Wood on April 10, 1939 in Wasco. He was employed at Silver Spray Market and Kern Medical Center before he went to work as a mechanic for Shell Oil. He retired in 1974 after 31 years of service. He and his wife moved to Tehachapi in 1978. Howard was a big jokester. He enjoyed fishing and for 30 years spent every summer at Shaver Lake. Howard loved to tinker in his garage and was known as a great friend and neighbor. He never met a stranger. Howard was a very family- oriented man who loved his family dearly. Howard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Minnie P. Cornelius of Tehachapi; three sons, Howard Cornelius and his wife Mary of Tehachapi, Curtis Cornelius and his wife Jean of Bakersfield, and Dennis Cornelius of Tehachapi; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother, L.F. Cornelius of Shafter; two special children in his life, Dakota and Peyton; and many other family members and life-long friends. He was predeceased by his grandson, Justin Cornelius; brothers, Tillman Cornelius and Luther Elliot; and sister, Norene Barry. Chaplain Ed Holton of Hoffman Hospice officiated at the service. Interment followed at Tehachapi Public Cemetery, Westside. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 404 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield, Calif., 93301 or the Alzheimers Association of Kern County, 5500 Olive Drive, Bakersfield, Calif. 93308.
