J. "Jack" 1930 - 2005 E.J. (Jack) Cox Oct. 15, 1930 - Dec. 2, 2005 Edgar Jackson Cox was born in Anderson, Alabama on October 15, 1930 to Laura Edith (Tucker) and Villard Cox. When Jack was about eight years old, the family moved to Taft. Jack graduated from Taft High School in 1949, went to work for Southern California Gas Company in Taft in 1951 and married Pat Bridge in 1951. Jack and Pat retired in 1987, sold their home in Taft and traveled in their motor home for approximately three years before settling down in Bakersfield. Jack was an avid fisherman who loved traveling in the motor home, taking cruises, and playing gin rummy with his friends. A quote from the autobiography he started, but never completed stated, "I feel fortunate to have had my kids, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren, my wife and my mother and dad and the rest of my family." Jack passed away at his home on December 2, 2005 after battling with lung cancer. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Cox Evans. His survivors are his wife, Pat; daughter, Nancy and her husband, Ernie Hampton of Santa Maria; daughter, Linda Cox of Nosara, Costa Rica; son, Fred Cox of Bakersfield; grandson, Bryson Sweaney of Bakersfield; granddaughters, Cassie Sweaney of Long Beach, Madison and Makenna Cox of Bakersfield; great-grandchildren, Caden Hill, Bailey and Branson Sweaney, all of Bakersfield; brother, Bill Cox and wife, Joyce; nephews, Gary Evans, Greg Cox, and wife, Anne; nieces, Diann Theis, Debbie Kirsherman, and husband, Brian; 9 great-nieces and nephews; uncle, Jack Tucker and wife, Onzel of Alabama and many cousins. Jack requested that he be cremated and did not want services. However, since he always enjoyed a party, friends and family are invited to gather at the home of Fred Cox on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. Those planning to attend may call either Fred Cox or Pat Cox for directions. The family wishes to thank Hoffman Hospice for all their support during these past few weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hoffman Hospice or the American Lung Association.
