Jim was born on July 23, 1924, in Clarksburg, W.Va. He attended Duke University for two years before enlisting in the Army to serve during World War II for the country he loved. After his discharge in 1947, Jim re-enrolled at Duke. In 1950, he graduated with degrees in math and history. In 1954, Jim moved to Oklahoma as a chaplain intern. While in Oklahoma he met and married the love of his life, Carolyn. They were married Dec. 17, 1955. After acquiring a teaching position in Texas, they started their family. He was a daddy devoted to his three daughters and his pride and joy were his 11 grandchildren. Most recently, his life was lit brightly by the birth of his first great-granddaughter. Everyone knew Jim by the life he lived for the Lord. He never met a stranger or a person he wouldn’t help and there was nothing he couldn’t fix or build. Jim had a contagious smile, a firm handshake, a strong sense of what was right and always willing to give his opinion or thought. Jim loved three things: the Lord, his wife and his family. He was loved by all who knew him. Jim is survived by his wife, Carolyn Carter of Tehachapi; daughters, Kim Nixon and her husband Mike of Tehachapi; Shawn Carter of Monrovia; and Kelly Schrage of Valencia; grandchildren, Sean, Tony, Melissa, Jacob, Trevor, Kelli, Donny, Nick, Corry, Auston and Cody; great-granddaughter Aubry; sisters, Virginia Zinn and Loise Blount; and brother, Joe Carter. Minister Jack Burch officiated at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Life Pregnancy Center, 112 S. Curry St., or to the Tehachapi Church of Christ, 401 S. Mill St. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the cremation arrangements.
