Chamberlain January 22, 1913 - May 19, 2005 Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 23, at Union Cemetery for Harry W. Chamberlain, who passed away peacefully Thursday after a short illness. Harry was a native of Bakersfield born in Old River on January 22, 1913. His original home has been restored and is on display in Pioneer Village as a fraternal lodge. Harry was raised on his Old River farm and attended local elementary and high schools and Kern Community College. He worked over 30 years for PG&E. He was a proud veteran of World War II and remained throughout his life a concerned world citizen always keeping up on the news. He was a talented musician who never had formal music lessons but learned on his own to play the clarinet and saxophone. In his younger years he played for dances at the Fairfax Grange. He also had a passionate interest in steam engines. He built a small one and traveled around the country enjoying several steam festivals. One of the most remarkable things about Harry, though, was his wonderful marriage to the love of his life, Ruth Walls Chamberlain. They were married over 50 years and were totally devoted to each other. After Ruths death in 1995 Harry bravely continued his life, being an inspiration to his niece and nephews and their children. Everyone admired Uncle Harry for his sharp wit, sense of humor, generosity, and unconditional acceptance. In later years he was confirmed to a wheelchair but still maintained an alert mind, optimism, and sense of humor. Except for this last year, Harry enjoyed good health and loved to go on outings. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Nora Chamberlain; sister, Violet Caldwell; brother, Fred Chamberlain; and wife, Ruth. He is survived by his nephew, Grady Walls of Bakersfield; his nephew, Andy Walls and Andys wife, Annette and children, Aaron, Adam and Acacia of San Jose; and his niece, Rebecca Beckey and her husband, Richard and sons, Todd and Josh of Bakersfield. The family wishes to thank Alternate Care and a special family friend, Freda, for their loving care of our Uncle Harry. We are also thankful to the kind and skillful nurses at Memorial Hospital for making Harrys last days comfortable. Harry Chamberlain was a special person who will never be forgotten.
