She was born on June 3, 1914, the eighth of nine children to Tom and Neva Cory in rural West Texas in a tiny hamlet known as Boyd Chapel. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Oleander, California near Fresno where her father and mother purchased land and planted grape vineyards. Although her family returned to West Texas when she was still a young girl, she vividly recalled her life in Oleander where she attended grammar school and helped in the vineyards. She re- visited Oleander several years ago and was able to identify the location of their school and their lands. She spoke fondly of the community spirit and cooperation of neighboring farmers with their family in sharing equipment, labor and capital. Eva, her husband Elzia and their 3 oldest children left Texas in December of 1939 bound for a better life in California pulling a 4 wheel hard-tired trailer behind a Model A Ford. Settling in a small house east of Bakersfield on Smith Road, close to Weedpatch Highway, she and her husband worked in cotton and potato fields near Bakersfield, in Oregon, Idaho, Utah and through-out California for the next 13 years. In 1952, they moved to Edison Highway where they operated a gas station and store for several years. Eva Lee was preceded in death by her husband Elzia and her second eldest daughter, Arlene Sorensen. She is survived by daughter, Karen Payne of Bakersfield, daughters and sons-in law, Wilma and Bill Potter, Linda and Terry Seybert, all of Bakersfield and by sons and daughter-in-law, Neil and Sharon Rains of San Francisco, Glen and Sheri Rains of Bakersfield and Ernest and Betty Sellers of Gardendale, Alabama. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces. The family wishes to express its sincerest appreciation and gratitude to the wonderful staff at Californian Care Center in their care of Mom in her final years and to Optimal Hospice for taking care of Mom in her final days. Graveside services will be conducted at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 8/2/2005.
