John grew up in Bakersfield, but lived in Delano for a short time before returning to Bakersfield where he attended high school and was in the first graduating class of East Bakersfield High School in 1941. After high school, John began his life long career with Southern Pacific Railroad, but shortly after, was drafted into the Army and stationed in India with the Railway Battalion at the beginning of World War II. Upon returning home, he continued his career with Southern Pacific Railroad until his retirement. John was very proud of his Greek heritage and dedicated to the Greek Orthodox faith, family and friends. He was very active in church activities and was a 50 year choir member of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, but his passion was sharing his talent for cooking wonderful Greek dishes, and did so by leading a group of family and friends in preparing meals for the annual Greek festivals, dinner dances and luncheons over a span of 25 years. John was also an honorary Italian and was a member of the Italian Heritage Dante Club, Elks Lodge, and Stockdale Exchange, and could often be seen in the kitchen supporting their efforts. John was ill during the last two years of his life but managed to stay in touch with his family and close friends. He has said that one of the things he missed most was his daily trips to the ELKS for his steam bath and conversations with friends. John was a loving and devoted son, brother and uncle. He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Pauline Daoutis-Harris; sisters Mary Harris and Anastasia Horton and her husband Tom; and nephew Jim Daoutis.
