She was born April 17, 1928, in Bakersfield, CA, daughter of Pauline and Louis Daoutis. After getting her teaching degree at UCSB she began her teaching career in Bakersfield. She accompanied a girlfriend to a teaching job interview in El Segundo and also landed a teaching job. This led to the meeting of her future husband, Tom Horton. They eventually settled in Hermosa Beach, raising their two children by the beach and feeding friends and family delicious food throughout their happy marriage. Peacha served her community as a teacher for over 25 years. Two years after the death of her husband she took early retirement. This started a time in her life of traveling with good friends and family to places all over the world, tennis and golf, gardening, and hoping for her kids to settle down, get married and procreate. Her children finally granted her wish, delivering four loving grandchildren. Peacha also found a new partner to share her beach home, Tom Pappas. They had been friends since childhood in Bakersfield. They enjoyed a life together, sharing each others families and friends. After recuperating from a stroke in 1992, she worked hard to be able to play tennis and golf once again. Peacha was always there to help out friends and family. She loved to spoil her grandchildren, watch an exciting golf and tennis match on TV, puttering in her garden, and playing bridge with her girlfriends every Friday afternoon. Starting in February 2004, Peacha started symptoms of an unknown muscular wasting disease. After one year, the diagnosis was Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrigss Disease. Her decline was rapid but many friends and family were able to visit and see her sunny smile once more. Survivors include her daughter, Kathleen Horton of Santa Barbara, CA; son, Tom Horton of Hermosa Beach, CA; brothers, John, Jim and George Daoutis and her sister, Elizabeth Doremus. Also left to mourn her passing are her blessed grandchildren, Madeline, Tommy, Cole and Shayna. Trisagion and Funeral service will be at St. Katherine Greek Eastern Orthodox Church, 722 Knob Hill, Redondo Beach, CA 90277, on Thursday, June 16, 2005 (Trisagion at 11:00 a.m. and Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m.). Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Assoc., 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301.
