Before she began school, they had moved to Mentone, CA where she attended school in Redlands from Kindergarten through High School. Following graduation from Redlands High School in 1948 she attended Randolph Macon Womans College in Lynchburg, VA for two years, then came home to Redlands to complete her college work and graduated with a teaching credential from the University of Redlands in 1952. Following her college graduation in 1952, Beverly was employed by the Kern High School District as a teacher of physical education and health at Bakersfield High School. Her first year was interesting as the gyms and other facilities at the high school had been leveled by the earthquake of preceding summer. The creative staff of the physical education department taught classes in the bus barn, at parks, along the areas between the Santa Fe tracks and 16th Street and any other available open space. On December 21, 1963 she was married to Fred Dukes, a principal in the Bakersfield City School District. She resigned her teaching position at the close of the 1963-64 school year to stay at home and soon became very active in her church and the community. She was very involved in the work and mission of College Heights Congregational Church until its merger in February 1997 with First Congregational Church of Bakersfield, United Church of Christ and has continued as an active member until her passing. Her special interests were with the local and world-wide missions of her church. Beverly was a member of the Board of the YWCA at the time their new building was constructed at 17th and M Streets. She also served as a board member of other community based organizations including the Kern Epilepsy Society, the Volunteer Center and the United Way. She has been very involved with Kern County Camellia Society, The Kern Division of the California Retired Teachers Association, The Sixty Plus Club at CSUB, the Kern Committee for Heifer International, and lately with Kern Habitat for Humanity. She was a busy worker. Beverly is survived by her husband of over forty-one years, Fred Dukes; by several cousins in Oregon and Washington; and by Freds family of two brothers and three sisters and many nieces and nephews. Services will be on Wednesday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. at The First Congregational Church of Bakersfield, United Church of Christ, Stockdale Highway and Real Rd. For those who wish, contributions may be made to the Music Fund of First Congregational Church, 5 Real Road, 93309; The Kern Division Retired Teachers Scholarship Association, 9705 Chirtsey Way, 93312-5617; or to the Fred and Beverly Dukes Endowed Scholarships at either the California State University Foundation, 9001 Stockdale Highway, 93311-1099; or The Bakersfield College Foundation, 1801 Panorama Drive, 93305, or as desired.
