He was born and raised in Detroit, Mich., and graduated from Redford High School there. Neil enlisted in the US Army at the start of World War II and served domestically as well as in Europe during those years. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the war, Neil enrolled at the University of Southern California and there met his future wife, Dorothy Day. They returned to Michigan to complete his degree. He graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1949. On returning to Southern California, Neil started a career in aerospace with Northrop Corp., where he was employed for 25 years. He raised his family in the city of Rolling Hills on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, retired to Bear Valley Springs, and, until recently, traveled between Bear Valley and his other residence in Portland, Ore. Neil is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rands of Portland; brother, Paul Day of Porum, Okla.; four sons, James Day of Dallas, Texas, John Day of Molokai, Hawaii, Bruce Day of Fredericksburg, Va. and Steve Day of Redondo Beach; as well as 10 grandchildren. He will be missed by all. Per his wishes, there will be no services. Any donations can be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
