Fred was born June 28, 1917, in Freeman, South Dakota, to Karl and Maria Delzer joining a family of 7 brothers and 2 sisters, joined The Conservation Corp. and worked on Mt. Rushmore from 1934 to 1935, coming to California in 1937. In 1939, he married the love of his life, Aletha Spitzer. He farmed from 1940 to 1970. Fred was a very active man, he was a Volunteer Fireman, Edison School Board Trustee, and 49-year Life Member of the Elks Club #266 where he was active with the bingo fundraisers, a Charter Member of the Grace Reformed Church where he taught Sunday School, was a Church Deacon and Treasurer. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Aletha; daughters and sons-in- law, Gloria and Roger Pitney of Greensboro, NC, and Marilyn and Ben Durham of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren, Brian Pitney and wife, Muriel of Richmond, VA, Michael Pitney and wife, Kathryn of Greensboro, NC, Rhonda Howard and husband, Dale of Ashville, NC, Neil Durham and Jason Durham of Bakersfield, CA; also 4 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Grace, Alixandra and Freddie. The family would like to thank Estella Alanso and Bakersfield Memorial Hospital 4th and 5th floors for their outstanding care and compassion. We will miss dear Fred and treasure many wonderful memories. We are comforted to know he had a good life here on earth and is now at home with the Lord.
