Downey, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at her home in Bakersfield, California, with her family at her side. Madeline, known as Mattie to all who knew her was born in Anaheim, California. She moved to Ventura, California, when she was in the 2nd grade. It was in Ventura where she made her lifelong home and raised her family along with her husband, Charles Ray Downey. Madelines career of service in Ventura Womens Club work was a big part of her life. She was a Charter member and Past President of the El Camino Womens Club; Past President of Tierra Adorado District, Charter Member of St. Annes Guild; Charter member and Past President of Parliamentary Law Study Club of Ventura County; Patroness of the Childrens Home Society; Community Memorial Hospital Auxillary member; and member of the Womens Division of the Ventura Chamber of Commerce. The friendships that Mattie made throughout her club work were lifelong. She cherished the many friends that she made and said many times that the lasting friendships were one of the greatest rewards of being active in her community. Along with Matties club work she was always very active in her childrens lives, never missing any of their activities. One of the greatest joys in her life was attending dance recitals, softball games, and baseball games to watch her grandchildren. She was known as Grandma to many that were not her own, but played a big part in her life.
