She was born in Fresno, CA, on July 7, 1934, to John Paul and Veda Rose Dudra. Joans family moved to Bakersfield when she was 3 years old. She attended Williams Elementary School (where at age 7 she met her future husband), Washington Junior High School, and graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1952. She attended UCLA where she obtained a B.A. in History with a minor in Business, and her Teaching Credential. She was a lifelong Bruin fan and always rooted for UCLA, and whoever was playing USC that week. In July of 1958, Joan married her husband, Leonard, of 47 years, and also began teaching at East Bakersfield High School. She taught at EBHS until 1966, when she took a break from teaching to raise her son, and in 1972, started at Standard Junior High School. After 28 years, and more than 6,000 students, she retired in 1993. She was very proud of her service in what she considered to be an honorable profession. Joan loved her two grandchildren. She loved being Grammy J. She loved to teach them card and board games and never missed a soccer game. She loved going to Jazz Festivals, Pismo Coast Village, photography, literature, and going to the moves with her friends. Joan is preceded in death by her Father, John Dudra; and her Mother and Stepfather, Veda and George Abadie. She is survived by her Husband, Leonard Galland; Son and Daughter-in-law, Mitch and Julie Galland; Granddaughter, Emily; Grandson, Alex; Stepsister, Yvonne Edmonson; Cousin, Linda Hupp; Sisters-in-law, Pat Moon and Betty Galland; Brother-in-law, William Galland; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Viewing and visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, 2005, from 2 8 p.m. at Greenlawn, 3700 River Blvd. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at 10 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel.
