Dukes July 1, 1920 - June 8, 2005 Fred Dukes was born on July 1, 1920, in Santa Maria, California, to Marie and Fred Dukes. Except for two years in Oil Center near Oildale, where his father was employed, he attended elementary and high school in Buena Park, California. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching credential from Whittier College, and later a Master of Arts degree in educational administration from the University of Southern California. Fred began his career in Bakersfield where he taught and counseled in the Bakersfield City Schools. He became principal of Mount Vernon School in 1956. Later, he served as principal of Millie Munsey, Peter Pan, and College Heights elementary schools. On December 21, 1963, Fred was married to Beverly Davis, a teacher of physical education at Bakersfield High School. Together they were active in the Congregational Church, first at College Heights Church in Bakersfield, and then at First Congregational Church. For many years Fred served as treasurer for the California Retired Teachers Association. He helped to secure CRTA scholarships for students from local community colleges and Cal State Bakersfield who are studying to become teachers. After his retirement, he spent years in service to Cal State University, first as advisor to student teachers, then on the scholarship committee, and as a member of the Sixty Plus Club. Some of his other activities included memberships in the Kern Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, the Bakersfield Principals Association, and the Community Advisory Council. He worked for Heifer Project, and for the Camellia Society. In 1968 and 1969 he was president of the Kern Philharmonic Society. Fred served on the Kern County Grand Jury, first as a member in 1980-81, then as Foreman in 1981-82. He was president of the Grand Jurors Association from 1984 to 1986. Among the honors awarded him have been the following: the Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education in 1980; the Alfred Harrell Man of the Year Award for volunteer service from The Bakersfield Californian in 1986; the Volunteer Extraordinaire Award from the Salvation Army in 1987, and the Outstanding Friend Award from Cal State Bakersfield in 1997. Fred is survived by his brother, Dr. Robert Dukes and his wife, Doreen of Coronado; his brother, Kenneth Dukes of Sun City; and his sisters, Helen Stringer of Aliso Viejo, Barbara Rayburn of Los Osos, and Dorothy Burkhart of Santa Barbara. He leaves many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Services will be on Saturday, June 18, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at First Congregational Church of Bakersfield, United Church of Christ, Stockdale Highway and Real Rd.
