He was one of sixteen brothers and sisters. In 1957, he enlisted in the French Army, becoming a paratrooper. He fought bravely in the French-Algerian war, earning several awards and commendations. After the war, he and several brothers and sisters immigrated to the United States, ending up in Bakersfield, in November of 1960. Jean first found work as a sheepherder in Tehachapi, living a life in the mountains that he so loved. He eventually started his own business of gardening and landscaping. Jean worked hard to build a successful business that he was very proud of. Jeans time was spent at work or with family and friends. He was an active volunteer in the Kern County Basque Club, and served on the Board of Directors, from 1980 to 1985. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid fisherman and hunter, he especially enjoyed deep sea fishing trips with family and friends. He is survived by his two sons, Daniel Pierre Etcheverry and Jean- Claude Etcheverry; and daughter-in-law, Elena Etcheverry; his sister, Bernadette Irigoyen; niece, Linda Hunt; brother, Marcel Etcheverry and family; remaining brothers and sisters in France, Marguerite, Francoise, Marceline, Christiane, Jeanine, Dominique, Marie-Jeanne, Bernard, Maite and Suzeane. His sons wish to thank Bernadette, Linda and Marcel for their vigilant and tender care during his hospital stay. His family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association. Rosary services will be held this Monday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the chapel at Greenlawn Mortuary.
