An avid fan of the 49ers and Giants, Jack was born in San Francisco on May 30, 1915. After earning his degree at Stanford University, he continued on and graduated from Stanford Medical School in 1942. At that time, Doc volunteered for the United States Army and, after a brief tour in Alaska, served as Major in the Medical Corps in the European Theater of WWII. At the wars conclusion, Jack served an additional year in Vienna, Austria as part of the effort to rebuild the European Health Care System. In Vienna, Jack met the lovely Margarete Wolfer and they were wed on September 7, 1946. He was discharged from military service with the rank of Lt. Colonel. After brief stops in New York and Salinas, the newlyweds settled in Taft where they raised their six children. Jack was a founding member and President of the West Kern Water Board and devoted countless hours to the West Side Hospital District and the Taft Rotary Club. He was a devout Catholic and a longtime parishioner of St. Marys Catholic Church in Taft. Doc was a dedicated physician in the community until he retired in 1988. His love of golf, music and poetry were widely known. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Margarete; his children, Robert Ellis and his wife, Pari, Christine Young, Mark Ellis and his wife, Karen, Susan DeCant, and John Ellis and his wife, Patty; his ten grandchildren and by his five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters, Kathleen and Beverly and by his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. We will all miss this great man, husband, father, leader and friend. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m., at St. Marys Catholic Church in Taft. Rev. Msgr. Michael Braun will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in the West Side District Cemetery. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1710 Gilbreth Rd., Burlingame, CA 94010. Please specify, stroke research.
