Harper Essary was born June 8, 1911 in Snyder, Texas to O.C. and Nellie Essary. He was the fourth child in a family of nine children. He grew up in Texas and New Mexico. He married Matymae Johnson on Jan. 1, 1936. They were married for 68 years until her death on August 7, 2004. They moved to Bakersfield in 1965. Harper is survived by his daughter, Doyce Stewart and husband, Ivan; two grandchildren, Linda Heyart and husband, Nick; Bob Stewart and wife, Lynette; his great-grandchildren, Tyson and Ben Stewart, Bryn Sapien and Jamie King and 9 great-great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Skylar, T.J., Ashley, Damien, Dominick, Donte, Taesha, and Kailey. He is also survived by his sister, Jewel Roark; brother, Bud Essary and numerous nieces and nephews. He was nicknamed Gramps or Big G after his great-grandchildren were born. He retired as a lather in 1975. He kept busy gardening, making salsa from his home-grown tomatoes, onions and peppers, growing oranges and lemons and he won ribbons at the Country Fair for his giant banana squash. He was a diehard Dodger fan and enjoyed watching football and basketball on TV as well. He will be greatly missed by all of his family, friends and wonderful neighbors. No visitation was scheduled.
